We arrived early (5:30) at the lower trailhead and proceeded to work up to a point about 2.5 miles in (and still about 2.5 - 3 miles from the upper trailhead). We parked there when the going got too much for our trusty Mercedes SUV. We walked up the road to the upper trailhead lot in just 70 minutes, which, compared to the time needed to drive this section, was a smart trade-off.
We found many campers below the Lakes, and we were able to snap a great photo across the lake looking up at Crestone Needle. After passing the lakes, the pitch inceases dramatically, for the remainder of the climb.
We used Bill's guide and followed a well marked trail with plenty of cairns. We summitted 4.5 hours after starting. (Note: There is no register on this peak.)
On the decent we encountered some light rain, and accidentally took an old trail which ended up cutting off about 3/4 of a mile in returning to the upper trailhead. A nice find! We got to the car, loaded our gear, sat down, closed the doors and within 30 seconds the skys opened! What incredible timing. Total trip time was 8.3 hours. Not bad for a couple of old guys nearing 60! It was a really nice hike and we had the sore muscles to prove it!
