 Grays on Summer Solstice
What a way to spend the longest day of the year! Started from Stevens Gulch Trailhead about 6:15 AM with a loose band of ten ranging in age from 13 to 53 (Sandy, Kyle, Drew, Neal, Gary, Dibby, Dusty, Kley, Daniel, Chris), some with original ACLs and knee cartilage, some without. Home bases included Albuquerque, Orlando, Tallahassee, and DC. Experience ranged from "first climb of any kind, anywhere" to grizzled veterans of Ranier, Switzerland, Colorado and elsewhere. Within a half mile, we gradually split into two groups with entirely different objectives. The trail was in great shape and it was a beautiful day, low 50‘s at the start, max of about 70 on the trail, and dropping back down to 50‘s or less and blowing hard on Grays summit. Some may have regretted not bringing that last fleece or vest when we left the car. Marmots, pika, ground squirrels and birds on the trail, leading up to some very friendly goats who came down to meet us as we neared the summit. Oddly, I got the sense that they were expecting something ... but they didn‘t get it from us. We descended via the Torreys saddle trail and Kley diverted for a quick solo trip up Torreys "on the way home". On the summit we met a guy, pretty much on the dead run, who was doing a round trip from I-70 to Grays/Torrys and back. He was training for an upcoming one-day push on Ranier - best of luck to you, my friend. Outstanding day, and I think we made a few hiking converts for the long term.
