 Quandary - East Ridge
My husband Jarrod and I came to Breckenridge for a week of relaxation...next thing I know he has it in his head that we are going to climb Mt. Quandary. So after a few easier hikes we decided to give it a go. We found the hike to be great and a real challenge. We started at 7:45 am and there were already several people on the trail. The scenery and the views were incredible especially at the top. We are from Florida so it was difficult to breathe especially on the way up but we went very slow and steady. When I say difficult to breathe I mean very difficult to breathe-Jarrod could hear me from quite a distance away! After you come to the 1st peak (false summit) the trail gets even steeper and the last 1.5 hours was the toughest part of all. We climbed very slow but steady and took many short breaks as needed and were still able to get to the summit in just under 3 hours. After about 30 minutes at the top we began the trek down which was an intense challenge on its own...going down is very steep and because of all the rocks and difficult terrain you cannot go fast. Don't get me wrong-it is quicker on the way down but not too much. We took 6 hours round trip including 30 minutes on the top so that left about 2-2.5 hours for the way down. We hope you found this recount of our trip to be helpful as you plan your trip to Mt. Quandary. This was a fantastic experience for the 2 of us and we will be doing more 14ers in the future!
