Pikes Peak via Bottomless Pit and Y Coulior
Did a great ascent of Pikes Peak via the Bottomless Pit, up the middle of the Y coulior. Went straight up the middle of the "Y" and discovered great terrain for shortroping (3rd and 4th class) and climbed a few pitches of 5.7 in boots. Weather was excellent. Details: Parked car at Pikes Peak Highway enterance. Paid fee ($10 per person). Hitch a ride from gate to top Bottomless Pit, western edge past Devil‘s Playground. Down climb into pit (1.5 hours). Make camp near old cabin foundation. Please observe minimum impact and leave no trace principals. Climb any route in immediate area prior to bedding down for the nite. There are so many routes of varying difficulty to choose from, but no guide book exist for that place that I know of. Leave camp before 06:30 and start towards Y Coulior. Climb any way you want to summit. Watch out for touist throwing things down the coulior if you are going up a chute. Best advice is to stick to the high ground (ridges). Try to be off the summit before the afternoon thunder storms come in (watch cloud developement as you climb). You can make the climbing as hard or as easy as you want it. Once on the summit, try to hitch a ride back down to the gate. People driving pickups will likely pick you up as you can ride in the back with the trailer hitch. Most peole there are out of state tourist and are scared easily by the sight of two climbers trying to hitch a ride. If you‘re lucky, a park ranger might give you a ride.
