My status is I'm 73 and a couple of months ago in Pennsylvania (at Altitude 350 feet) did a 5k at a mile pace of 8minutes 26 seconds. I've now done 6 14ers, all Class 1 or Class 2; so, this report is geared accordingly.
I started the trail 8/24/2026 at 6:00AM, with a beautiful sunrise just as I was starting out. Finished and returned to the car at 2:00PM. Perfect weather although it was very windy with high gusts. It felt quite cold for a hot August day back in Colorado Springs: I changed into my long pants, had two thin layers and an old Gortex shell with a hood and an ear head band because the high winds/gusts made the 50 dF feel very cold. Pit toilets were excellent but didn't have toilet paper in the morning but were well stocked with TP when i returned to the car in the afternoon. I drove up to the newly finished Kite Lake parking lot in my Toyota Corolla with a 5.3" clearance: I was careful not to bottom out on those 6 miles to Kite Lake parking by going between 5 and 10 mph and was picky where I maneuvered my car in the washboard and rocks, but never had to get out to measure nor had to make serious compensation. I went Counter-Clockwise. I was glad I didn't have any part of the trail ascent or descent in the dark. (Last Summer I walked in the dark up Elbert SE face for the first 1hour and was very comfortable, but this ascent would be difficult for me in the dark.) I did Bross and didn't trespass on private property, then Lincoln and Cameron. I descended without going up Mount Democrat. I found the descent very challenging with very little relief from the endless footing and strength requirements. Without trekking poles I definitely would have slipped, stumbled, and fallen numerous times: as it was I only fell twice from "ball bearing" effect of small pebbles on stone flats. This descent was much more challenging than my last year's introduction to 14ers with Elbert SE Face, Bierstadt, or Quandary due to the required continuous mental and physical concentration to keep from falling or sliding. The trail maintenance crews had done magnificent work but the rock files and rockfalls are incredible difficulties for them. Great new timber steps! Beautiful views, perfect weather, couldn't ask for a better day! I'm 73 and very appreciative! Thank you 14ers and AllTrails!! Enjoy!
