 west ridge- South Colony TH
5/12/06

Fairly straightforward hike, not much snow between South Colony 2wd parking and 4wd parking. Someone‘s old school Chevy Luv was broken down on the trail and looks as if it‘s been there for a while. Above 4wd parking plenty of snow, especially below Broken Hand Peak in shaded areas. Broken Hand Pass very snowy. Snow nice and crusty early a.m. but became slushy as the day wore on, causing frequent postholing. Bring gaiters. Trail was difficult to find at times, but I knew from past experience to just head toward the lakes and everything would be fine. Once on the south facing slopes of Humboldt, the snow was no longer an issue. Nice and sunny the entire day, the hike was long but enjoyable. Reached the summit around 12:30 and lounged around for about 1/2 hour. The wind was strong and persistent, but I was properly clothed. The views of Crestone Needle/Peak to the west were breathtaking. Decided to descend east ridge to avoid snow and met up with the trail about a mile down. Didn‘t see a soul the whole day until I was 200 yards from my car. Some guy was planning on climbing Crestone Peak the following day after camping. Wished him luck and continued on. First peak of the year for me, and it was awesome to have such a gorgeous place all to myself.
