 Mid week hike

Started at 10am and summited at 4pm. The long June days are where I enjoy the high country. Imnot an early bird, but I still get worms. 😘

Paid to park for the full day ($30) at the trailhead. I planned this trip so I could start late.

there were maybe 10 people on the trail on a Wednesday, which sounds like I lucked out on this because I hear this is a very popular trail given its proximity to Breckenridge.

The trail is clear the entire way, no snow on the trail to speak of at all. no spikes or winter equipment needed. Wind breaker was perfect. Layers needed for body temp regulation. It was 70 in breck.

3.5 miles straight uphill takes up the majority of the time.. I spent 6 hours climbing (including about an hour lost to all trails) and about 1.5 on the decent.

From the parking lot to the trailhead is maintained dirt road. Once you hit the trailhead the climb begins. Super challenging uphill, but doable. All Trails led me astray for about an hour but I was able to scramble up some rockfall/scree to get to the top. It was super sketchy and I do not recommend.

The wildflowers are in bloom and there will be some really beautiful pinks and purples once the Rocky Mountain Penstamon and Rocky Mountain lupine blooms. Yarrow and asters are blooming, as is the miners delight. Penstemon is almost ready and the raspberries aren’t ready yet; some are still in bloom and others have tiny white berries that will be ready soon

animal report: 3 goats, 2 pica, 1 woodpecker, 1 jay. One off leash dog. The dog didn’t like the goats, but stayed close to the owner. LEASH YOUR DOG. GOATS AND MOUNTAINS ARE UNPREDICTABLE. EVEN THESE TRAIL GOATS WILL YEET YOU AND YOUR DOG.
