Grays Peak and Torreys Peak - Mini Trip Report (07/20/2025)
New to Colorado and decided that it was time to take on my first two 14ers. I chose Grays and Torreys because they are located relatively close to where I live, and I was not disappointed! While I prefer to climb in groups, I took on this class 1 climb solo because I felt confident in my ability and equipment, but would love to have a partner for my next climb.
After sleeping in my car overnight, I started early (around 4:30am) to beat the rush and get a good ways into the hike before the sun was fully out. I expected it to be beautiful, but the sunrise blew my expectations out of the water and it was a genuinely amazing experience to watch the sun rise over Kelso Mountain. The climb up Grays Peak was fairly straight forward, and the views from the summit were incredible as well. From there, I traveled across the saddle connecting Grays and Torreys peaks, and summitted Torreys Peak. After a short break to eat a snack and drink some water, I made my way back down the mountain, crossing a very small snow field to get back to the main trail and complete the "lolipop" route. Upon returning to the trailhead, I chatted with a few fellow climbers, got in my car, and headed back home.
This was a very good introduction to 14ers for me, but I am hoping to find something a bit more challenging for my next project! Please enjoy a couple of my favorite photos from the climb (below).
A few stars in the sky as I began my climb in the early morning hours.Lovely morning for a climb. This beautiful sunrise behind Kelso Mountain served as my reward for waking up early.Felt lucky to spot this family of mountain goats while ascending Grays Peak!
