 Castle Conundrum Cherry

Drove Jeep rubicon to end of 4WD trail at ~12800ft alt the night before. Started up NE ridge at ~Sunrise, took the ridge itself, not the trail up the castle side of the basin, easy low-ish talus ridge, nice climb. Hit the saddle on NE ridge btwn false peak and castle and then went straight up to Castle peak n/p. Took the easy down climb and saddle west to Conundrum. Summited Conundrum both peaks and then just kept going (north-ish) along the ridge and down climbed that NE face of Conundrum through the boulder fields back to the Jeep. The down climb of Conundrum’s east face was faster (even going safety slow) than re-climbing Castle from the saddle and going back the way I came. There was another climber who summitted Conundrum after Castle just behind me. He retraced the route we both took to get to Conundrum and I easily made it down before him by more than an hour. I didn’t see him before I left in my jeep for Aspen. Easy day, ~4hrs total, if that.

Looking back, these two peaks were in my top 3 of most enjoyable with little effort. The 12,800ft start at a high mountain lake. The peaceful, restful night, falling asleep listening to the mountains cool down and the boulders resettleing as I drifted off. Sleeping in without a care. The crisp morning air with no one around. Going up a ridgeline to the top. Surprised by how short it was. Going down another way that was even shorter on a perfectly warm, slightly breezy mountain morning. Leaving as everyone else arrives. High TH, low effort elevation gain to peak, the view, the weather, the solitude, the serenity, the serendipity, reaching into unreached portions of my soul. Cherry Sweet 🍒

Tree blocking road?

In the end of may I tried summiting Castle/Conundrum peak but was unsuccessful, but I remember a felled tree blocking the roadway at about 10900' alt and was wondering if it is still there? Going back for another attempt and want to drive my truck to the end of the road.

You can always just post a Conditions Report (less requirements there). Also of note - your 4th pic is of the headwall lower on the route. You can't see the saddle from the parking area. In any case - thank you for the update on the area!
