Nothin' like a hot breeze (aka 50mph winds) to warm your bones on a long and hot hike. Winds were STIFF yesterday, I think something like 50mph sustained winds with gusts up to 65mph. So windier than I wished for, but summited both in okay time. Took 3 hours 59 min to summit and 2 hours 49min to descend with a bit of trail running in there.
Trail to Shavano is clean and clear. Route finding was a little annoying. There were people climbing all over the place on the way up, I think mostly due to trying to avoid the wind, so many were hiking up the Angle ascent instead of the true standard route. There's a bit of snow left towards the summit of Tabeguache that you just need to stay to the left of, but totally fine to get up to the peak. There is also a small snowmelt pond at the base of the saddle on the Tab side that you'll have to hop over a bit of that, but its easy to avoid. Yesterday was the hottest start to a 14er I've ever had, it was 58 degrees at 4am and 80 degrees by the time I finished 12:20pm, so that was not my favorite, especially the blisters, but a fun hike nonetheless! Was a little bummer about the lack of shade provided by the trees at the end, but it was high-noon when I was finishing up.
early morning start.
