 Springtime San Juan Climbing

I started maybe 2 miles past the Cataract Gulch TH. Snow plugs blocked the road for driving past that point. The approach up the road is pretty straightforward. Once you reach the Cuba Gulch TH just keep following the old mine road to the right. You'll stay on this road as it switchbacks and finally brings you to the cabin just below tree line. When you get above tree line you will be in the basin with American Peak's south right directly ahead. I climbed the east slopes of this ridge. Crampons and a mountaineering axe are a must to get up this ridge. After about 1000ft of climbing a steep snow slope you get on top of the ridge and you can see the final approach to the summit. This first section of ridge was very tight with a cornice hanging off to the right so I took my time and carefully traversed this section. The final approach up the ridge to the summit of American is much less sketchy and went much faster than the thin corniced section. The summit views in the heart of the San Juans in springtime were incredible. My goal for the day was the traverse over to Niagara but I worked harder than I expected to summit American and decided to leave the rest for another day. I glissaded down from the ridge that forms the southwest side of the basin. There are multiple options if glissading is your descent method of choice. Sorry for the lack of photos. I'll try to remember to have my camera out more next time.
