 Uncompahgre Summit Sleep

Quick little mini trip report to highlight a very cool way I found to spice up lap 2 for Uncompahgre - hiked up in time to watch the sunset, the stars and the sunrise!

Sleeping on a 14er had been on my bucket list for a while and when I looked at the peaks I had left for lap 2 of the 14ers I knew I had to save Uncompahgre for a time when I could pull off a summit sleep.

Uncompahgre has at least 4 professionally established campsites on the summit that have been leveled, cleared and surrounded by rock berms - perfect for small tents or bivys.

If you want to experience this for yourself, please stay in the established sites so as not to damage this unique and delicate alpine environment. Please also note that campfires are prohibited above treeline in this area (but I didn't see any restrictions on having a small Jetboil stove to heat up some hot apple cider!)

But you'll have to pack all the water you need since there's none anywhere near the summit.

The site I picked was large enough for my 2 person tent but not quite large enough to properly stake it down tight (though maybe with a little more effort I could have worked out a solution), so the tent flapped around a good bit in the breeze that started up just after I finished stargazing. As such, I should actually have named this report Uncompahgre Summit Resting Under the Rustling Tent... but that didn't sound as snappy.

Enjoy the photos!

As someone that's generally heading down from the summit when others are heading up, I'm inclined to say you have me beat. (Or is this just a really late start?) Anyway, great pics!
