 Mt. Massive the Hard Way

Howdy Ya'll,

I hope you find this interesting. This was my first 14er, at the ripe young age of 59. For my wife, this was her 20th 14er. We drove up to the trailhead and slept in our SUV. We started nice and early, at 5:40 am, but I did not have a good dinner or breakfast. For a variety of reasons, I did not prepare my meals adequately and ended up thinking I'd be fine. I consider myself in good shape and run usually 3-4 times per week, and do some weights. So, I was cruising in the beginning. The first 1.5 miles were easy, and we quickly got through that. Then we started the final 2 miles, which had a 3,200 incline. We took the short route. I was still feeling fine for the next mile and a half but became very nauseous with only 1/2 mile remaining. The last 1/2 mile took me quite a long time and when I arrived at the summit, my wife congratulated me publicly, and everyone clapped, as it was my first 14er. For several minutes, I vomited and felt pretty miserable. At the time, I wasn't sure if it was the altitude, my lack of training, or what I did or didn't eat. I was embarrassed and humbled and had a long walk back down across many rock fields. It was pretty hard, and I was bummed that I performed so poorly. Since it was my first, I chalked it up to the food I ate. I was determined to do better. So, the next week, I hiked Mt. Elbert and a longer, higher peak; thankfully, I did much better. I summited in 3 hours and 20 minutes and felt great. I guess the moral of the story is to eat well the night before and the day of. It's a crucial preparatory step!
