 Quandary - East Ridge

Sep 18. We encountered 2 tame mountain goats on the trail, above 13,000 feet (see attached pic of a goat at approx 13,200 ft). On our decent at 10:30 am we heard two close-range gunshots on the flat section of trail at 13,000 feet. Within 5 minutes we came upon the hunters (one man around age 50, two men around age 30, and a woman around age 30). I was warning an ascending hiking group with a dog that "a mountain goat is up this trail, watch your dog." That is when I first saw the hunters just a few feet off the trail on the southern side of the trail where the slope is steep to the Lower Blue Lake. The older hunter said "No kidding?" and I said "I'm warning these folks, but you already know that don't you." He said yes, so I asked, did you shoot a goat? And he pointed to the young woman and said "She did." I asked "Is it visible?" and the older guy replied "she shot it and she (a female goat) rolled down the hill out of sight" (toward the Lower Blue Lake). So I asked "How are you going to get it?" and he said "We gotta hike down there." The woman had her gun mount set up just a few feet off of the trail. I said "Good luck" and we kept hiking down the trail. It was very odd that a group of hunters were a couple of feet off the trail, and admitted to shooting one of these mountain goats that are so tame they walk within 10 feet of hikers on a busy hiking day when the parking lot is full. So when we attained cellphone service toward Breck I called the Forest Service, and the Col Parks and Wildlife. The CPW officer said there is no restriction on hunting so long as hunters are not shooting toward hikers, and the goat population is healthy in number. Apparently that was the first day of goat hunting season. The point is, be careful and watch for hunters. And be prepared to take close-up photos and video of these goats knowing that hunters will be killing them.

Hunters have the right to be there too. I could never kill game myself, but I enjoying talking to hunters. I happily give up info on elk. I never rat on bighorns. I'm conflicted on goats. They are so damn cool and docile, but they also are an introduced species that can cause trouble for native sheep.

Wild animals are not tame.
They can get used to people.
Goats love your pee.

But, in the right situation, that goat will stick its horn in a person or a dog.

Legal hunting is perfectly fine and good for the overall environment.
Too bad it has to be right along the trail. That part kind of sucks.
