We camped at Matterhorn Creek TH Friday night. I was surprised at how few people were around given that it was a holiday weekend. We started hiking at 4:15 since we were planning on climbing both Wetterhorn and Uncompahgre. We followed the excellent trail up to Wetterhorns ridge where the scrambling begins. The ridge was a lot of fun and we quickly made it to the routes crux right below the summit. The climb up from there was easy, but a little exposed. We reached the summit at 7:15 and it was amazing. I think that is the earliest Ive ever been on top of a 14er. The sun was rising up from behind Uncompahgre. We enjoyed the summit alone for about 45 minutes before heading back down and over to Uncompahgre. We passed about half a dozen other hikers on the way back down.
If you are considering climbing this peak soon it is definately ripe for the picking! No problems at all with snow.
