Hiked Mt Lindsey this weekend, 18th June.
We camped at the Lily Lake trailhead. Next morning left the camp and came to the Huerfano river, which is overflowing its banks and has many smaller brooks flowing all over the trail. Came to the main crossing where people have piled logs across the river, not too bad.
Continued on the trail , at around 10800-11000 ft the snow covers the trail, so we had two options, to follow the gully in snow and trees upto the basin or go straight up on snow and talus. Since straight up was clear without any trees , we decided to follow that route and so did every other person hiking that day. Going up we had two options to walk on talus or snow, We decided to walk up the snow which was quite pleasant. After walking to the top which is nearly on the same contour as the basin , we made our way to it.
We reached the basin easily which was 80% snow covered . Out there the trail is visible again and without snow. we took it and reached the Iron Nipple- Lindsey ridge without any problems.
As Bill says in his Route discription "Here is where the fun begins...". The steep gully in the north face of Lindsey is snow filled and at first sight looks foreboding. We had two options - stay on the ridge or climb up the gully. My partner decided to do the ridge and I the gully, which was pretty much decided by if one has crampons/ice ax or not. The Ridge is solid rock but exposed in parts, the snow in gully made it easy for me to haul up . The route is steep in this portion , varying from 35 to 45 degrees.
After the finishing with the gully we took to the ridge and walked to the false summit to the main summit. It was a great day with no clouds and deep blue skies . Blanca Ellingwood Ridge looked particularly awesome. We could see Crestones/Blanca Group/Spanish peaks.
On our way down we took the gully and glissaded down which is not too bad. On reaching the basin we decided to follow the main trail back but again were thwarted by snow blocking our path. So we countoured to pretty much were we had climbed up and glissaded down some more.
As we reached the trailhead the moon was rising over Iron Nipple - a perfect ending to a great and beautiful day
