My First 14er was in the 1970s

I was 17 years old when we hiked Gray's Peak on August 6, 1973. So glad for my brother's help looking it up for me.

It was a cold day, with some snow beginning to fall before I reached the peak register, where we recorded our names.

All I have to show for it is a copy of an old photograph that my brother Lowell e-mailed me, and a faded memory of the hike.

Me on the left, my brother's ex-wife in the center, and my brother Lowell, in the hat.

Behind us is the summit cairn and a post. Lowell thinks a handful of people from our church came along, and one snapped the picture for us. I think others in our group continued to Torrey’s Peak. I did not include that one in my hike that day. I would later bag Torrey’s as my 10th 14er, at age 62, on August 11, 2018.

That was a nice report.
I first hiked Torreys in early June, 1987.
Thanks for the memories.

I completely lost interest in them until the kids were grown and gone.

Although we need to discuss the timeliness of your report submittal. 48 years seems excessively long. :)

But I know what you mean. I grew up with the mountains all around me but they were nothing more than a backdrop to my life growing up. My family hunted and fished and I could probably name one or two of the 14ers but the thought of climbing them never crossed our minds.

Funny what you take for granted in the place where you grow up.

There wasn't even internet, much less 14ers dot com in 1973. I thought it'd be fun to catch up on my reports!

Yes, Colorado native, and camped and hiked with the family, but also didn't give a thought to collecting summits until I was an old lady already.

Thanks for your sentiments!
