Chicago Basin - N.Eolus, Eolus, Sunlight, Windom - Sept 2005
Sept 22
Debbie and I drove to Durango and caught the train into needleton on Thursday. We hiked up to 10,800 in Chicago Basin and set up camp. Hail, lightning and rain were our hiking partners.
Sept 23
Climbed N Eolus and Eolus under cloudy skies. Weather held though, nice day. Mud and piles of hail on the ledges leading to Eolus summit made things interesting. Here is a pic which gives a good feel for the ledges after the catwalk:
Sept 24
Debbie and I climbed Sunlight, then Windom (her 32nd and 33rd 14ers). Sunlights summit block wasnt that bad, although with the wind blowing like it was, I wasnt brave enought to stand on it, just sit. Debbie tagged the summit. Here is a pic of what some people consider the hardest section of climbing required to summit all the fourteeners by the easiest routes:
Headed over to Windom, using a high 40 degree snow couloir to reach the ridge at a notch. Finished the 58 14ers with this summit! Ah, what a day. Here is a pic of Windom, the snow climb we used to reach the West ridge (far right) and sunlight spire (far left):
Sept 25
Ya, I finished, but there is no way I am going to stop climbing. Reclimbed Windom alone via the basin between Jupiter and Windom to get a 3000 summit. This route has no trail, but is a nice alternative. Met Debbie back at camp and we hiked out to the train.
We saw a mountain lion crossing the road on the drive back home around 12 am 10 miles south of baily on 285. Amazing to see one of these predators in the wild. A nice addition to this awsome weekend.
These 14ers as a group are my favorite. Capitol still remains my lone favorite.
