 Mt Wilson without tears!

This is not so much a trip report as a offer of information for anyone climbing Mt. Wilson via Rock of Ages.

The photo shows many paths, all of which have cairns marking them. The RED path is the correct path. By correct, I mean easiest, least dangerous, most efficient.

The lower half of the red shows two options, depends on snow.

The Orange is close to what is suggested here on 14ers.com, but I don't like it!

How do I know? Yeah, I have hiked them all.

Have fun out there!

I have added a photo from last year, looking from the top down.

I added a third photo with a black route. Note the XXX at the bottom. The mistake I have seen people make is trying to bust straight down over this cliff band. . When the snow is good, and you have a good idea when to break off and traverse to the right, it isn't a bad option. But red route on the crest of the ridge is the best.

Do you recommend the red route for the descent as well?

Absolutely! It is THE line on the mountain, up or down.

Additional beta or photos on red route
4/6/2023 9:46am
Wentzl - I am looking at tagging Mt Wilson from ROA TH this summer (already bagged ED and WP but bailed on traverse a few years ago due to weather). Any additional photos or beta you can provide on your red route? Or pointers to another TR with additional information? I can't seem to find any other climber beta on it. Looks relatively straight-forward, but having another picture or two would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't have more photos that would be useful, but I suggest accessing the ridge direct as soon as practical on ascent, or sticking to the ridge direct as long as possible on the descent. This has worked well for me several times and seems way more fun than scrambling across the N. Face on the many social trials that exist there.

Why havent I seen this

before??? This coming weekend we are planning on using a car shuttle and starting at Kilpacker, then climbing El D to Wilson to Gladstone to Wilson Peak to Rock of Ages TH. I absolutely HATED the class 4 downclimb on Mt Wilson the last time I did it (didn't mind the ascent really), so your RED route on photo 1 looks like the way to go. Just to clarify, on photo 2 the GREEN route is the way to go, not the RED. Right? Thanks.
