Not sure if this qualifies as a trip report but I wanted to pass along my experiences:

  • I arrived at Kite Lake at 3:00 PM on a Sunday. There were still several camp sites available. The parking lot was about 25% full.
  • I climbed Mt Democrat that afternoon (the weather was great). I had the mountain almost to myself (I passed two hikers on the way down).
  • Bypassing Mt Democrat on the loop the next day allowed me to miss most of the morning crowd.
  • If I could do it again, I would return via Mt Cameron and the Cameron/Democrat saddle rather than the south side of Bross. The descent from Bross was not fun. If you can do that descent without ending on your butt at least once, you are a better hiker than me.
  • As reported, the last 1/2 mile or so of the road to the lake is very rough. If your vehicle does not have 8" of clearance or more you will likely bottom out.
  • I hike with poles and found them especially useful on the descent from Bross. I met another hiker who was using micro-spikes for additional traction.
  • I am an average speed hiker. My hike up Mt Democrat took about 2:45. My loop (excluding Democrat) took about 4 hours.

Can I ask why 5 people would "dislike" a perfectly helpful trip report?
