My fiance & I came out from Minnesota for the weekend to see Van Morrison @ Red Rocks on Friday Night, so we thought would also tackle a 14er while we were in the area. I figuered Quandary would be short drive from Denver, so we camped near the trailhead allowing us an easy & early start. The weather the previous few days had been threatening with snow & rain, so we both were prepared for the likelyhood of having to turnback due the failing conditions.
We got on trial @ 5:45 AM & it was easy going through the trees to about 12,000. It had snowed 3" to 4" that night, & this along with the remaining snow slowed us a bit, but we had no postholing on the way up. The weather (i:0875ae0839)seemed (/i:0875ae0839) to be breaking for the final push to the summit, but by time we reached the top, the wind was blowing good so we only spent 5 minutes on top, & we didnt dare pull out the register for fear it would be blown into the next county.
On the way down we ran into 15 to 18 people headed up, some that looked very expirenced, & a few that were in tennis shoes & cotten sweatshirts? (We were in gortex pants, hats, gloves, fleece jackets, & we were not over dressed) About 1/2 mile before we reached the trees, the clouds came in fast, visability dropped to a 1/4 mile, and the wind picked up to 30/40 mph with pelting frozen snow. The snow had also soften so we had some postholing over the final streches of snow. By the time we made it back to the car it had stopped snowing, but half an hour later it started coming down hard. We were glad to be out of there, & thankful we had gotten an early start. Driving through Breckenridge, it started raining pretty good, & continued to rain & snow for most of the drive back to Denver. I guess summer conditions are a few week off yet.
