Grays Peak - May 10, 2005.
I got to within a mile or so of the actual TH, which was nice. The road is melting out quickly now. I dont know why they call this a 2WD TH - Its not. Granted, I am a crappy 4x4 driver, but I just cant picture a car making it up there.
I strapped on the skis right outside my car, and skinned almost all the way to the summit. There were several brief areas where I had to shoulder my skis to cross a dry spot.
The weather today was really nice. The winds picked up every now and then, but overall, it was a warm, sunny, spring day.
I chose to keep close to the ridge that leads to the Edwards-Grays saddle. It seemed like the safest route based upon aspect and terrain. There were several wet releases on the Torreys face and the bowl between Grays and Torreys. The northerly facing aspects of Grays were still winter-like. Its a really mixed bag up there right now, and going solo, I chose what I thought was the safest route.
Once atop the saddle, I packed my skis to the summit on the ridge. I wanted a summit ski, so I skied down a little bit below the summit, and then made a long traverse to the area I skinned up. I then skied this all the way down to the trail. The snow was a little punchy, but still fun. Once back on the trail, I just sailed it back to the car. On the way down I avoided most dry spots since I could see everything in front of me.
The best part of the day was the solitude. I was suprised to see only one other climber, and that guy barely made it to the start of the upper trail before he turned around. He was far below me, and I cant imgaine what made him abort. It was a really beautiful day...
