 Flats are unskiable

Climbed and skied James Pk from St Mary’s Glacier TH. Because it snowed about 2 inches yesterday, we were able to skin all the way to summit from the lake. HOWEVER on the way down we had to walk in boots for about a mile in the flats above the Glacier. Still lots of snow above flats but plan on booting it from the top of the glacier to the bottom of SE face of James unless there’s more snow up there soon.

Skiing on the lower glacier is pretty awful. Cups and lots of footprints. Above the flats skiing was nice. We summited just before 930.

Might be a better place for something this brief.

Thanks for the info but this is a condition update, not a trip report.

Sorry Bill. I looked for 13ers under condition updates and somehow completely missed them.

More Options

There are a lot of options on James that are far from flat. Next time you're up there, check out the east face couloirs (absolute classics).

No Problem

I made it more obvious on the Peak Condition Update (ADD) page by changing the Peak: label to 14er/13er: so we know the 13er peak names are in that list.
