Big Adventure 2016
Each year myself and my finisher buddy Scott get together to have an "Adventure". This year we decided to do Mt. Zirkel and Clark Peak to see an area of the state we don't normally see, and also to snag another couple county highpoints!
Saturday, August 27th
Mt. Zirkel - modified Zirkel Circle route, with bushwhacking (see GPX file!)
This ended up being quite the endeavor. We bushwhacked on the way there but ended up taking the loop back. All said and done it was about 15 miles. Some of you may find the GPX file useful, I couldn't find any GPS tracks available online, but we did read some prior trip reports for guidance!
The bushwhacking portion isn't difficult but the first part involves carefully navigating a marshy area (please try and minimize impact!) which was frozen for us. And then climbing a steep hillside before eventually attaining the ridge. From there it's pretty straightforward but the length of this climb will surprise you! The actual summit push is very mild and has nice views of Big Agnes and the surrounding area.
This trip was neat. Zirkel is in a pretty area and we saw not only a bear, but also Bighorn Sheep. The lower portions of the hike were quite lush. Steamboat is awesome. You really can't go wrong with Mt. Zirkel.
Food Report:
Back Door Grill in steamboat was awesome for burgers, and prices were reasonable. Seemed to be a very popular place.
BEER REPORT:
We stopped at 3 breweries in Steamboat. Butcherknife was OK, but their Amputator IPA tasted off to me. Storm Peak was great all around. Mahogany Ridge was decent but unremarkable.
