 Bee Careful

This weekend my boyfriend, my dog, and I went camping near the trail head of Mt. of the Holy Cross so we could get an early start on the hike. We were worried we wouldn't be able to find a camp spot knowing it was the holiday weekend so we took the first one we came across. I leashed my dog to a nearby tree so she wouldn't run away but could still see us while we set up camp. We were almost done setting up camp when I noticed my dog start to act strangely. I then noticed a few bees around her. I asked my boyfriend to help her, because I am allergic. By the time I turned back around she was completely swarmed with bees and tied to a tree. He went in to save her and I ran away so I would not get stung. He then spent the next 10-15 minutes trying to get all of the bees off of her. A picture of the campsite is here. While not a great picture, the nest was off to the left in the small group of trees. We think the nest was actually in the ground.

Be warned that there are a lot of bees on and near the trail head! Even while hiking the next day we would walk past trees humming with bees. This may not be helpful information to all, but to those with bees allergies it is nice to be prepared. Thankfully all involved are okay and we were able to complete the hike the next day, after switching camp sites.

Congrats on Holy Cross! Very interesting story with the Bees. I had one recently too, it didn't go well for the bee, let's just say she was S**t out of Luck!
