North Couloir Ski - Grizzly A
With a successful climb/ski of Grizz A last weekend, the consecutive months of skiing streak reached 20! The North Couloir is particularly alluring because it seems to be visible from everywhere. In climbing Massive the day before, it could clearly be seen to the southwest. We drove over Indy Pass, snagged a sweet campsite and enjoyed a few brews.

We were on the trail at 5a the next morning and made good progress. The most difficult part of the day ended up being the snowpack in the lower sections. It had been a warm few days and in the absence of a hard freeze below 12500' or so, we spent a good hour intermittently postholing and willow bashing before reaching the coolie proper.

After some initial concerns with the snowpack coming in, we were pleased to discover the couloir to be in much better shape. Another hour got us to the top.

A summit tag gave us a few more minutes to let things corn up before it was time to drop in.

The line skied great. It may touch 40 degrees here and there but mostly a straightforward nice wide coolie ski. It's big, I'm sure you could ski it pretty well all the way through June and July. The positioning above the lake is particularly spectacular.

The lower snowfields, which were even gushier now, fortunately linked up well enough where we were able to ski down to 11500' or so.

I just skied it on Monday, 6/27. I just love this line. So good! Lower snowfields ran out at about 11800'.
