 Huron Tough Road Beautiful Climb
My buddy, Peter, and I arrived at the 4WD trailhead about 6:00 am. This was Peter's first fourteener and my fourteenth. We are both in our 60's.
The 11/8 mile gravel road has bad wash boards. The 4WD trail was in terrible condition, worst I have seen for a 14er trailhead road. (Much worse than Greys/Torreys). Drove my Honda Pilot slowly, getting out several times to move rocks and look at the deep holes, water and dips before negotiating them. Took over 1/2 hour to go those 2.1 miles. Definitely need a 4WD with lots of clearance. But lots of good campling spots and parking along the way and at the trail head. And not as crowed, of course, as Kite Lake, Sherman, Greys or Bierstad. No rest rooms at 4WD trailhead.
The hike was great. Nicely maintained trail, and incomparable views. The long hike up the switchbacks through the tree was on a very nice trail and quiet. When you break out of the trees and get up on the basin you have great views of the three Apostles and other surrounding peaks, including Huron. The view only get better as you get higher. Good Trail across the Basin.
Thank you to CFI (I assume) for the great trail steps and maintenance. It was a tough hike, a lot of elevation gain in a short amount of distance, but good footing makes these hikes easier.
After the basin the hike up is again on decent trails and a steady grind all the way. The last stretch towards the top is tough going up and tougher going down due to the loose rocks and dirt that make footing tenuous.
The Peak area is relatively small which makes the experience even more breath taking. But the views of the Sawatch Range and other Collegiate Peaks is to die for.
This is a great hike.

... on the successful summit, from someone approaching 60 his ownself. I summited Huron back on July 9 and thoroughly enjoyed the views from the top. The altitude messed me up pretty bad that day - even though I had had an enjoyable hike to Lake Ann the previous day. The four-wheel drive section of the road was interesting; like you said, lots of nice camp sites along the way. I opted to camp at the Winfield campground because I was basing there so I could access the La Plata trailhead during the same visit. Great little ”end of the road” place to spend a couple of days.
