 Nothing But The Best
Uncompahgre Peak has been THE mountain I've wanted to do since I first started climbing 14ers (three years ago); it lived up to my expectations and then some. Best weather. Best views. Best climb.

Party: Bald Eagle, Gar-Bear, Jackoon
Elevation Gain: 3000 feet
RT: 7.25 miles

Trip Report:
Left Pagosa Springs at 0500
TH at 0840
Summited at 1140
Left Summit at 1230
Back to TH at 1400

Notes:
The drive up to the TH is the most difficult part of the day. The road is barely wide enough support one truck, and is riddled with large rocks and deep dips. Contrary to what the sign at the start of the road says, high clearance is much more important than 4WD capability. If you plan to start hiking at the base of the road, expect a very long day (15 miles RT/ 5,000 feet elevation gain).

The Class 2 section of the climb is underrated, in my opinion. Handwork was required throughout the entire crux to safely pass, and to my understanding, this suggests Class 3 ranking. That being said, it was definitely the most enjoyable part of the hike... very solid, very fun rock.

There is another route to clear this section, but the rock isn't as solid and there is more dirt; it is a better option for descending, in my opinion. This path is located about 50 feet to the left of the first trail. There is some exposure involved in reaching it.

Other than this brief section, the trail is a hike and is in excellent condition.

This hike offers some of the best views I've seen in Colorado. The great weather, coupled with the lack of wildfire smoke and Denver smog made for spectacular scenery. Enjoy it! This is without a doubt a 14er climber's 14er.
