I got into Climbing last summer. Ive enjoyed the 13ers more than the 14ers. I just found that I like the solitude and the challenge more.
I didnt see a whole lot of summer conditions reports for Atlantic so figured this would be a good one to write for my first trip report
Date Climbed 8/4/2012
Climbers: Me and my 9 year old Siberian Husky (Nanuq)
Distance: About 7 Miles RT
Difficulty: Mostly Class 2 with a Difficult Class 2 Crux
Found a Good Campsite off of McCullogh Gulch Road about 1 Mile from the Trail Head
5:00 am Wakeup Call and Fullmoon Over Quandry
Full Moon
A quick 1.5 Mile trip on the McCullough Gulch Trail takes you to the lake. There are a lot of social trails here that head to the falls just stay on the largest trail. Fletcher and Atlantic are in the distance. There is a trail that runs all the way up to the upper Basin however I chose to stay in between the Trail and the waterfall and climb up some fun ledges.
The views on this hike really sucked.
In the Upper Basin and the ridge between fletcher and Atlantic. I will leave that ridge to the better climbers
At about 12500 the trail disappears and you just head North through a boulder field toward the Pacific Atlantic Saddle. Judging from the map this is only about 1/2 of a mile but seems to take forever as there are several ups and downs. On the way down I found a cairned trail by turning right immediately after getting off of the slope. It really didnt seem to save any time.
The picture doesnt begin to descirbe what a long slog it is to get to the slope.
The loose and steep crux of the route. I went directly toward the snowfield and then skirted the tower on the right before traversing left to reach the saddle. On the way down there were some loose boulders directly above this tower that I downclimbed. Once over the boulders there is a ramp you can use to get back on the scree.
The Upper Half of the slope was the loosest part. I was glad to have a helmet here.
Should have brought my skis as the lines on the snowfield looked sweet :-)
A better look at the loose boulders I descended and the ramp i used to get back on the scree on the upper right hand side.
From the saddle its just a short hike to a nice summit...

Good job on the first report! Looks like a sweet climb. I definitely need to try my first 13er soon now
