Going for Gold on Gannett
I don't really know how we were going for gold. It just happened to be during the Olympics that we climbed Gannett. Gannett Peak is one of those mountains that just doesn't get the respect it deserves. I had told my wife early on in the summer that Jason and I would be climbing Gannett Peak which is the highest point in Wyoming at 13,809 feet. I kind of got a "that's nice dear" response from her, but she's never very impressed by the mountains I hike anyway. Once she saw me packing my rope, harness, ice axe, crampons, and helmet; then she started asking questions and responding to my answers with lots of concerned sounds. She said "I thought you just going to do some little 13er in Wyoming." "We are," I said,"it's just that it's a 40+ mile round trip and we have a couple of glaciers to cross." Apparently the word glaciers had not come up in our earlier conversations. Gannett Peak is a fantastic climb and though it falls almost 200 feet short of being a 14er, it is certainly worth the trip for those wanting to expand their mountaineering experience beyond what can be found in Colorado. Jerousek	Man... 8/10/2012 5:27am Redemption on Gannett. Big Grats! A pack difference of 27 lbs?! Wild. just wild. Really enjoyed this report. Refreshingly succinct text, useful info, and nice photos of a staggeringly beautiful area. Island lake just looks like something out of a dream. This trip is one that I've been kicking around, but it's landed squarely on my radar for next summer/fall. Thanks for that. How cool was it to rapp the Dinwoody schrund? Grats to you both on making it up and back safely.

Congrats on getting the summit with less-than-ideal conditions at the 'schrund, you definitely earned it. That western approach looks tantalizing--I may have to come back for it someday. Your experiences running low on water and having an exceedingly long summit day mirror mine, even though we came from the east with an easier day. Amazing mountain and area, all around.

CO Native	Thanks 8/10/2012 2:53pm @ Jerousek: I pack totally different now than I used to. I used to be proud that I could carry a 75 pound pack. Now I'm older and smarter and am proud I can carry all that gear and it only weighs 48 pounds. I wish I would have brought my helmet mount for my camera during the bergschrund rap. The view looking into that when you come over the edge is crazy. It looked much tamer in the video than it was. Thanks for the compliments on the report, and glad I've inspired some to got do this mountain. You won't regret it.

Carl	Great TR! 8/15/2012 9:51pm Wish I saw this on Thursday before we headed up to Gannett on Friday as we would have had spot on beta and been even more pumped for the trip. Excellent pics and congrats on getting the summit. Definitly more physically and techinically challenging than I expected. Glad to see you got some beach time.
