Nepal climbing for amateurs.... |
Just got back from Nepal. Completed the Yak Highway also known as the Everest Base Camp Trek. Great trip with amazing scenery. Also able to add in a quick detour to climb Lobuche East. Great opportunity to get to 20,000 ft on the cheap without going broke. Considered a trekking peak it is a quick snow climb without an expensive permit.
After a week of trekking and acclimatizing me and my guide hiked up into a high camp at around 18,000 ft. from the village of Lobuche. It only took a couple hours and resembled a rocky unmaintained 14er. We set up some tents on a small rocky plateau and waited for the clouds to break. The next morning we woke at 2am and set out around 3am with head lamps. After a couple hours of mixed rock, ice and snow climbing we hit the glacier as the sun came up. It was crazy how little oxygen there was even at this altitude. We made our way through the glacier maze and hit the base of the steep snow climb. It was a little steeper than I thought. Well over 45 degrees. I had a great Sherpa Guide (3 Everest Summits) who climbed lead. After a couple more hours I crawled onto the summit around 10am with an amazing view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Pumori and Ama Dablam. Took some pictures and chowed down on some apples and mars bars before descending. Made it down to camp as the clouds rolled in. Broke down the tents and headed back to Lobuche for some hot tea and some grub.
