HURON PEAK SEEMED LIKE A GOOD CHOICE FOR A QUICK WEEKDAY SUMMIT. LEAVING FROM AURORA, IT'S ABOUT A 3 HOUR DRIVE TO THE 4WD TRAILHEAD. (162 MILES). COUNTY ROAD 390 IS CLEAR OF SNOW OR MUD FROM HIGHWAY 24 TO THE TRAILHEAD. (ABOUT 13 MILES). ROAD 390 IS HOWEVER LIKE A WASHBOARD, AND YOU'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE GOOD TIME. THE LAST 2 MILES ARE 4WD ONLY, AND IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO PARK AT WINFIELD IF YOU'RE NOT IN A 4WD. THIS WAS A TOUGHER CLIMB THAN IT LOOKED LIKE, & TOOK THE BETTER PART OF OUR DAY. AFTER RETURNING TO THE TRAILHEAD, WE HAD A COLD BEER & BBQ'D SOME ELK BRATS....ALWAYS A GOOD WAY TO END THE DAY. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT 6:30 THE TEMPERATURE WAS WELL BELOW FREEZING. MOST OF THE MORNING CLIMB WAS IN THE SHADE, SINCE THE ROUTE CLIMBS FROM THE WEST, AND THERE WERE A FEW SPOTS WHERE RUNNING WATER HAD FROZEN OVER ON THE TRAIL. ALL ICE DISAPPEARED AS SOON AS THE SUN CAME OUT.
AS YOU NEAR THE SUMMIT RIDGE, IT FEELS LIKE YOU'RE ALMOST THERE, BUT 500 VERTICAL IN THE NEXT 1/4 MILE MAKES YOU WORK FOR IT.
WIND AND CLOUDS ALWAYS SEEM TO BUILD IN THE AFTERNOON, TODAY WAS NO EXCEPTION. BREEZY (10-15 MPH) THE CLOUDS MOVED IN ON OUR DESCENT, BUT NEVER THREATENED RAIN. TEMPERATURES CLIMBED TO THE UPPER 60'S - LOW 70'S, AND TREELINE PROVIDES WELCOME SHADE FOR THE LAST 1300 FEET OF DESCENT.
