Pikes-Crags TH |
I found myself in colorado springs on the rare occasion in Nov. 10-11th I couldn't pass up the opportunity to go hiking! I made it to the crags TH in my rental ford taurus pretty easy. I had to wait 10 min for a front loader to finish a section of the road he was resurfacing. I ran into a few people snow shoeing that just came back from the crags and I talked to them for a bit about the trail conditions. They had recogmended walking the road another .25 miles to the campground and starting from there. It was starting to get dark so I got all my gear situated and did a little car seat sleeping.
I woke at 4:20 am the 11th started the car and went back to sleep for about 20 minutes. I started down the road about 5:15 after a quick breakfeast and plenty of moon light to see. The trail was nicely packed and easy to follow for the first 2 miles. I had to shed a layer at this point, I was starting to sweat. It was only 20 degrees out with little wind. At about 11,100' I took the trail to the left that I believe is the "winter" variation of this section. I continued to follow the trail to the tree line where it was faint. I reached the top of the slope a little after 7. From there it was very easy to follow the trail with little snow. I took the road around point 13,363 to avoid some deeper snow and putting on my gaitors. I made it just in time, right after I made it back on trail I could hear the snow plow coming up the road. Made it to the top around 11:15 got my pic taken by a tourist and headed done.
I stoped just past devils playground had some lunch and another gu pak. Tried to follow the trail back down the slope and ran into a few deep spots of snow. Once in the tree line I found the main trail and headed out. Made it back to the car by 2:15. Great weather couldn't of been much better. I could of used my gaitors and micro spikes on a few sections, but never took the time to put on. Good boots and trekking poles were just fine.
