Northeast Slopes via Spruce Creek - tough sledding!
Headed up to Pacific Peak with 'MountainFreak' yesterday and had a pretty sweet trip with a mix of blue skies and gnarly wintery weather. We met at the TH and headed up at 7:45 on foot, without snowshoes or skis (it was a tough decision), as they didn't appear to be any fresh snow and cover was fairly sparse. I've never been into the Ten Mile before and loved the box canyon on this particular approach, the steep lines, and the fun route finding.

After slogging to the upper lakes we assessed the chutes leading to the ridge, noting that the snow was variable, wind loaded, some evidence of wind slabs breaking loose recently, etc, so we proceeded carefully and decided to make our climb a mixed rock one, rather than just snow in an effort to minimize any slide danger.

This shoulder season climbing continues to be pretty tough due to the snow/rock scree fields, but we made it through without any banged up shins, sprained ankles, or smashed up legs!

On the descent, we picked a bit of a different line, basically the main route so that we could glissade a bit.

That last mile was near "death march", but we made it back to the car at 5pm and headed into Breck for a well deserved burger and a little bit of football watching. Good times!
