 Tab/Shav AM
Last weekend I was in the Salida area for some treeline Mountain Biking and decided to kll a morning by knocking out a couple of nearby 14ers - I settled on the Tab/Shav combo due to their proximity to Monarch Crest.

And kill a morning I did.

The standard route from Blanks Cabin is long, boring, and not especially scenic until you reach the saddle.

The trail is well marked so you shouldn't worry losing it.

Via the standard route these are two peaks that you should only climb if you're looking to kill a weekend morning, or bagging peaks on your way to 54.

Mt Shavano, for it's part, is a peak so unremarkable you're required to summit it twice so you won't forget it.

---

It's a longer hike, and due to questionable trail engineering, you're required to summit Shavano twice. Weather should be a very real concern for anyone seeking to bag Tab since the only "escape" would require (re)ascent to 14,200'. SO START EARLY.

Along the first mile there are some very large and very nice spots to camp. If attempting a Saturday summit I encourage you to hike in Friday and take advantage of any of them. It beats an early AM drive, or sleeping in the lot to facilitate the necessary Alpine start.

I hit the trail at 5:30 and arrived at the summit of Shavano at ~8:50. 50 minutes later I arrived at the summit of Tab. Another 50 minutes later I was on Shav, again. 2 hours later, I was back at the trailhead.
