First 14er of the year, stayed in the Springs overnight, and left for the trail head at about 5:00AM. Stopped for a quick drivethrough breakfast in Woodland park and we were on the trail head by 6:15. With just two of us, and being in pretty good shape from a lot of mountain biking, decided to keep a very quick pace today and see if we could get up and back in 6 hours flat.
made a very quick ascent to treeline and kept a good pace to Devils Playground. This was the day of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb so the playground was packed with people and their trucks and coolers. No problem crossing the road as the race had not started yet and pushed on to the summit.
Very windy and cool as we made our approach to the peak, a short scramble up to the top. Made the summit in about 2:45. The summit was empty because of the races, the road to the top was closed off after devils playground. There was one other hiker who kept pace with us most of the way up who was on the summit with us, and other than that, just a few vans from the local news channels for the race. Probably as empty as the summit ever is in the summer.
Had some great views of cars racing as we made our descent back to DP. Again, crossing the road was no problem even with the races going on as the cars are spread out by about 5 minutes, and there is really nobody looking to control folks anyways.
Seemed to take forever to get from DP back to the Crags camp grounds, miles 12 and 13 were pretty long. cashed 48th ounce of water about 20 mins from the car, glad I was well hydrated, will take more water the next time I hike over 10 miles. Weather was awesome and trail was pretty empty. made it back to the car at 12:28, just a hair over 6 hours.

My son and I are taking his high school CC team up Pikes from Crags campground...looks like it will be a great time. Is the snow pretty much melted all out below treeline?
we did not have to cross any snow fields except one small area above tree line below the scramble to the summit. maybe only 100 feet and its probably melted by now.
I figured it was pretty much all gone. Thanks for confirming. Can't wait for the 26th to get here now!
