 Skiing Democrat's east face, June 8, 2011
Party: Doug and Ian. Left Avon at 5am. We parked the car about 2.7 miles from kite lake and starting hiking the dirt road in our ski boots; there is a giant snow drift just past one of the old mining operations that blocked the road. We hiked on the road for seemingly an hour or so until we got a few hundred yards from kite lake where we were able to start skinning. Only saw 2 other hikers up there on their way to Bross. It was nice to have such a bustling trailhead in the summer to ourselves with winter-like conditions June 8th! The night before got to freezing in the kite lake area so we knew stability was on our side with recent freeze/cooling that recent warmth has provided. It was a blue bird morning and things starting warming quickly. We skinned past the lake and and approached the mountain from the traditional east face summer hiking trail. Aside from a couple of hikers going up Bross (which looked pretty clear of snow) we were the only ones up there. We really took our time on this skin enjoying the nice weather and views. We summited around noon after some arduous skinning because of the sun warmed snow. It made for tough skinning up so we knew it would make for perfect corn condition skiing down. When we did get to the summit it had clouded over and the South facing aspects seemed a little crunchy. Because of that we opted to ski back down the east face; we knew perfect spring skiing awaited. It really was perfect spring conditions. We again took our time taking photos and videos. We got down and skirted along the stream and saved time hiking the road. Perfect day of solitude in the rockies.

Sidenote: If I had to guess I'd say the east face of democrat is skiable for another week or two assuming the warm weather continues; rocks are starting to show through. The S and SE aspects look great and possibly could be skied for another month. There is still a lot of snow up there.
