Herman Gulch Trailhead

Info: Still no bathrooms here (unless you count trees). Dramatically larger parking area than the tiny Dry Gulch trailhead less than 5 minutes down the road. That trailhead has no trees and nothing to block light or noise from the almost immediately adjacent I-70. But Herman Gulch is pretty much surrounded by trees and sits slightly farther off of I-70. For me the background noise of the traffic was perfect for falling asleep to. Several other folks overnighting here, with the dirt lot being large enough to spread out in.

Info: There are no longer any bathrooms at this TH. Why would the Forest Service remove these at such a popular location?

Info: Hiked Parnassus on Saturday and arrived at the TH at 6:30 AM. North side of the lot was 95% full with no one parked on south side of lot. Got back down to TH at 11:30 and cars were parked up and down the interstate on/off ramps, the road under the interstate and on the side roads near the TH. Best to arrive before 7 AM or avoid on summer weekends.

Info: Only one other car when I started at 9:30 am today - Memorial Day! Parking lot and first 3/4 mile dry (other than moisture from ongoing light snow but above freezing temp so it evaporates/melts quickly). Knee-deep post-holing off and on through snow belts last mile before lake.

Info: Huge lot, 2 port-a-potties. A bit bumpy at the entrance, but still passable by any vehicle. Cars were parked all along the entrance road mid-day (Labor Day Weekend traffic or the norm?).
