Ironically, maintenance vehicle traffic to make repairs damaged the road. They are just now discussing repair options so it will be a long while before it opens again. There's a possibility that the road might be closed all summer. Said the way to get status on the effort would be to call them. (970) 468-5400 | ||||
9/6/2018 Posted On: 9/6/2018 By: sigepnader Info: Rough 2WD the entire way to the trailhead. One area of standing water about two miles in but can be drove around. I wouldnt take a sedan up but if you have some clearance you will be fine. | ||||

Made it up pretty easily in an AWD SUV with decent clearance - took about 50 minutes from to cover the 4.5 miles of dirt road. It was totally worth it, with tons of wildflowers and only a few other hikers on the trail (that is, until Grays). | ||||

Otherwise, lots of potholes, but overall I'd put this more in the category of "rough 2wd", maybe comparable to 4th of July access road. On a separate note: saw a few vehicles make it all the way up to Argentine Pass from the Waldorf Mine side. Also saw some genius 4-wheeling right over the tundra. Seriously people? | ||||

Some avalanche debris covers the road about 1/4 mile from the Argentine Pass parking area. A couple vehicles plowed through but there is also room to park about 6 cars at the debris field. | ||||

The only thing different from Bill Middlebrooks Southwest Ridge route description is that a good quality new footbridge has been placed over Peru Creek. | ||||

Some large puddles and small run-off streams before snow blocks passage within maybe 200 yards of the true trailhead. Wide shoulder just below this drift with room for 2-3 cars provides parking at the moment. | ||||

8/15/2014 Posted On: 8/24/2014 By: emgordon Info: Summit County Media Release: A new 70-foot-span permanent bridge will be placed over the Snake River at the site of the washout, restoring vehicle travel along Montezuma Road in its pre-washout route. Bridge installation work will take place the week of Aug. 25. Crews will transport the bridge and abutments to the site in eight pieces and are tentatively scheduled set them on Wednesday and Thursday,Aug. 27 and 28. Montezuma Road will be closed to through traffic for extended periods on these two days, to allow crane operators to efficiently install the structures. Crews will pave the new bridge the week of Sept. 1, with a target of opening it for vehicle traffic by Sept. 6. Anticipated Montezuma Road closures for paving operations will be limited in number and short in duration. |
