8/6/2023 Posted On: 8/6/2023 By: bagelbattalion Info: Plus one-ing the detour bypass route. To summarize again: CR-6 to CR-6D to CR-6A to CR-2, then a right onto CR-2B. Agree 4WD probably not essential, but clearance definitely is. Saw an outback there when we returned but they were the only other car, so great if you want to avoid people in the beginning/have some solitude. One note: CR-6A is VERY rough in places, so allow a little extra time to get to the TH due to this. Google Maps makes it easy to see the route, Apple Maps did not have a couple of the CR's. | 1 |

8/1/2023 Posted On: 8/1/2023 By: BoardingHiker Info: I did this bypass route yesterday and concur with previous reports that it is very doable. No 4wd needed but decent clearance needed for rocks/ruts along the detour. I have a truck and that was more than adequate, but I think any mid size SUV could make it. Also, take CR-2B as stated below by Michaelsweet as it looks much better than CR-2. I just mapped it with a few points on google maps and saved it to make it easier.
7/24/2023 Posted On: 7/24/2023 By: Larjones Info: Drove 4 1/2 hours only to find County Rd 2 closed well below the normal trailhead. Can't give an exact location, but the barricades are below the turnoff from the pavement onto the gravel/dirt section. The Lake County website give the following information: "Alternative route to Mt Sherman take County Road 6 to County Road 6D to County Road 6A"
7/21/2023 Posted On: 7/21/2023 By: michaelsweet Info: We took the route posted by DrBarbarick: CR-6 to CR-6D to CR-6A to CR-2 around the road closure. We have a stock 4Runner and it was fine on 6D though there were some narrow, slow, rough sections. Thanks for posting as it was a huge timesaver. We were the only ones at this trailhead today. Our mistake was that we took CR-2 not CR-2B at the Black Cloud tailings pond. CR-2 is a narrow rough 4WD trail that was very slow. CR-2B is slightly uphill but a wide easy drive. | 2 |

7/18/2023 Posted On: 7/18/2023 By: DrBarbarick Info: Detour to the Iowa Gulch Trailhead during the CR-2 closure: take Country Road 6 to County Road 6D to County Road 6A. It looks like CR-6A will dead end at CR-2 past the road closure. The roads are all clearly labeled on Google Maps. (This description comes from the Lake County website that others have linked to. I thought it might be helpful to have the information posted as an update.) | 1 |

7/5/2023 Posted On: 7/5/2023 By: BeckyYoung89 Info: County Road 2 is CLOSED to vehicle traffic down low before the Sherman Road turn off. This closure will add something like 3-4 miles EACH way to an Iowa Gulch hike. | 2 |

7/4/2023 Posted On: 7/4/2023 By: aholle88 Info: CLOSED, contrary to the prior report. There are still very large cement barriers blocking the road. Someone decided to cut the chainlink and fencing between those barriers. And then some wise folks decided those concrete barriers dont pertain to them and drove over the fencing and chainlink to reach the TH. Use common sense folks, big concrete barriers in the middle of the road with fencing and chainlink on the ground between those barriers means something. | 4 |

6/25/2023 Posted On: 6/26/2023 By: dereks95 Info: Still closed at Pigtail Gulch, 4.2 miles back. It's a nice walk, but a long one.
5/20/2023 Posted On: 7/19/2023 By: BillMiddlebrook Info: The road closure from 2022 is still in place at 3 miles up from Leadville. The road is blocked, with parking off to the left. This means you'll have to walk nearly 4 miles to get to the actual Iowa Gulch trailhead. As for conditions, the road is snow-free almost all the way to upper trailhead. Too bad we cant drive there. | 2 |

8/24/2022 Posted On: 9/5/2022 By: GuiGirard Info: Easy road; no issue with an Outback. I saw at least one 2WD low clearance car at the TH. I just wanted to add that there a few nice dispersed campsites with amazing views on Mts. Massive and Sheridan within ~ 1 mile from the TH.
8/23/2022 Posted On: 8/23/2022 By: EndWillows Info: Super easy road. Any car can do it with good line picking. Priuses, go right ahead.
6/2/2022 Posted On: 6/3/2022 By: cloudkicker Info: Dry to TH.
5/18/2022 Posted On: 5/18/2022 By: PikaSteve Info: Road is very smooth and snow is avoidable to within a half mile of the end of the road. There are a few six inch rocks to dodge but otherwise easy driving. | 3 |

5/12/2022 Posted On: 5/12/2022 By: Russ Info: Starting about two miles from the trailhead, the road still has significant amounts of snow on it (2+ feet in places). Definitely walkable, especially with spikes, but I don't recommend driving that section without high ground clearance *and* low center of gravity. | 2 |
