Grays Peak Trailhead

?PARKING ISSUE
The Clear Creek County Sheriff no longer allows parking along the road to the trailhead. They say they will ticket those who do so and you'll see "No Parking" signs along the road. So, get up there very early and if the trailhead parking is full, you'll have to drive back down to the bottom of the road and walk up. Awful.

Info: Summer trailhead 3 miles up from I 70 is accessible for the season. Saw a Porsche Cayenne, a minivan, and a Subaru outback there today.

Info: Road is still intermittently snow covered. Most cars pulled off approximately ~0.7 miles below the summer trailhead, just before the first major avalanche chute off the north face of Kelso Mountain. A few high clearance vehicles attempted to drive past this point but at least one bottomed out before reaching the summer trailhead.

Info: Road is drivable for 2 of the 3 miles to the summer trailhead, beyond that it's mostly snow covered. A few snow drifts around the 1.3 mile mark warrant high clearance and good tires. Parking at 2 miles is quite limited and that area is mostly private property.

Info: Road is clear of snow to the Grizzly Gulch split. Some snow drifts up from there, but melting fast. I parked next to a sedan at the Grizzly Gulch split, so pretty much any car can get there right now. No ticket on the windshield upon my return, not sure when Clear Creek County will start doing their thing.

Info: Grizzly Gulch junction was accessible with careful driving and a high clearance 4WD to handle the snowy ruts. There was one stuck van left on the road, but it was easily bypassed and may be gone as they were waiting for a tow.

Info: Parking is still in the "Winter/Lower Trailhead" at the Chimney Lot. There are multiple vehicles currently stuck before the Grizzly Gulch split. I spoke with a tow truck driver that was helping some folks today. He charges $250/hr to get them out, and it takes him several hours because a skid steer on tracks is the only machine that can recover these vehicles right now. It sounds like the issue is people are driving on the frozen snow in the morning, and not realizing how soft conditions will be in the afternoon when they return. Just a heads up because it seems like the only person winning here is the tow company.

Info: Intermittent snow begins 1/4 mile from the start of the road near I70. Road is drivable for 1 mile to the junction at Grizzly Gulch, but high clearance and good tires may be needed to get that far. Multiple vehicles stuck.

Info: Snow is continuous from I-70 to the summer TH, starting to get thin at the base of Kelsos north face, but the snow Friday should keep it GTG for a week or so more.

Info: Made it up to summer trailhead with no issues in my 4runner w/ AT tires. Saw a suburu make it up that didn't have a lot of clearance but I don't know if I personally would have taken that risk. If you have a high clearance vehicle w/ 4WD its smooth sailing.

Info: Very easy to get to GG split, after that - a good driver with snow tires, good clearance AWD/4x4, cold conditions could get to and down upper TH too. Snow is at most, 4/5 inches deep with solid tracks in between. Biggest issue would be straying from that path where several vehicles have spun out and made mess in snow. Crazy though to say its very doable to reach upper TH in January. Dont block the road, saw many residents of area up there on Friday.

Info: Made it 4/5 of the way in a VW Tiguan before aborting due to deep loose snow on the road.

Info: Saw a 4Runner and a Silverado make it to the summer trailhead today. I did not particularly care to try in my Crosstrek, but your mileage may vary.

Info: Same as the Nov update below with regards to ice, now underneath continuous 2-3" deep snow cover all the way up from I70. There are occasional deeper drifts. Lots of sharks made the skin difficult along the road and all the way up the creek bed. Totally your call but please avoid driving up that road December to early March if at all possible. I head up that road a half dozen times each winter and have come across a stuck vehicle 5/6 times. Its also dicey for XC-ers / skiers to descend refrozen tire tracks.

Info: The snow is turning into ice flows. Id be more concerned about this in the coming week or two than snow based on the forecast. One person in front of me heading down lost it and spun around on one of the steep ice patches. I slid the whole way down that section and got very lucky. Both of us were in 4Runners with off road/snow rated tires, ice dont care what you drive. Use caution, or chains, or just avoid the road altogether for now because the ice wont be getting better.
