10/23/2009 Posted On: 10/23/2009 By: sevenvii Info: High clearance vehicle advised if you are wanting to drive all the way to the TH. Subaru outback made it to about 1.2 miles from the TH. Later on in the day some high clearance vehicles made tracks so it might be passable now, but still had a good amount of snow on the upper portion past the Mennonite camp.

9/30/2009 Posted On: 9/30/2009 By: CO Native Info: 9/29/2009 Road was totally clear and in good condition. The worst part is just after the cattle guard near highway 67. A bit potholed but easy to handle going slow and picking a good line. No snow on the road at all. Gate to the campground is still open.
9/23/2009 Posted On: 9/23/2009 By: AlabamaTLC Info: As of 11:30 today, about 5 inches of snow on the access road to the campground; about 7 inches at the start of the trail. I got a 4wd KIA Sportage to the campground with no problems; campground gate was unlocked. Coming out had to help a young couple and their dog in a 2wd car turn around at the first small hill pass the Mennonite Camp as they could not make it up the hill.
9/11/2009 Posted On: 9/11/2009 By: ColoNativeinPA Info: Lots of construction vehicles at the new parking area. Park to the inside side of the parking area to avoid getting boxed in by the construction equipment.
8/17/2009 Posted On: 8/17/2009 By: CO Native Info: ***Major Changes to trailhead*** The forest service has now built a parking lot for hikers before the campground on the right side of the road. If parking here cross the road and look for a bridge across the creek. Follow this trail to where it intersects the Crags trail. Almost immediately after joining the Crags trail will be the intersection to turn right and cross another bridge to head up towards Devil‘s Playground and Pikes Peak. The original parking lot is still available for use but costs $5 a day and they are stepping up enforcement of this fee.
6/28/2009 Posted On: 6/28/2009 By: George Kaplan Info: Road seems mostly well-graded now and fine for all passenger cars. There are a few odd pot-holes and ruts along the way that can be easily driven around.
6/9/2009 Posted On: 6/9/2009 By: CO Native Info: The road to the trailhead is clear, but rough in spots. Cars can get to the trailhead with careful driving.
5/3/2009 Posted On: 5/3/2009 By: BAUMGARA Info: My 4Runner made it up to Crags today and many other 4WDs. A few more weeks and cars will be able to make it up there.
5/1/2009 Posted On: 5/1/2009 By: astrobassman Info: Road isn‘t plowed beyond the Rocky Mountain Campground, but a 4wd can get within half a mile or so of the TH. A lifted truck made it all the way to the TH.
4/23/2009 Posted On: 4/23/2009 By: Vangrove Info: 4/23/09 Crags Road is vehicle passable only to parking lot just beyond Menonite Camp. About 2‘ snow base beyond. Add 1.25 mi. shoe/ski into campground and to trailhead.
4/13/2009 Posted On: 4/13/2009 By: fox_inthesnow Info: A storm last night dumped over 1 ft of snow on the road. Some cars made it to 1/4 mile before the Crags Campground, but it looks like the campground won‘t be accessible for a while now, unless we get a warm front.

3/21/2009 Posted On: 3/21/2009 By: PDMeier Info: 3/21/09 No problem getting up to the trailhead. Some occasional snow that turned soft on our return trip. There were about 10 cars up at the trailhead when we left most with 4 wheel drive.
3/1/2009 Posted On: 3/1/2009 By: Papillon Info: The road is a sheet of ice starting one mile below the lower parking area (about 0.5 miles past the Rocky Mountain Camp). There were many 4WD vehicles parked above and at the campground but my civic couldn‘t gain traction so we hoofed it. |
