12/22/2010 Posted On: 12/22/2010 By: Straus Info: Still good! Only a little bit of packed snow.
12/8/2010 Posted On: 12/8/2010 By: Kevin Baker Info: Crags road is still clear to the new TH. 2WD might even still get there. Still no need for snowshoes. Just a few icy spots here and there, but Microspikes/Yaktrax would be overkill right now.
12/5/2010 Posted On: 12/7/2010 By: hillbillyMOUNTAINEER Info: Road to TH covered in snow, 4x4 ideal, trail is covered in snow until timberline, rest of trail is fairly clear. Suppose to warm up this week, so road may get better.
12/2/2010 Posted On: 12/2/2010 By: Vangrove Info: Road is snow packed and easily drivable to the (new) parking lot and trailhead, just before The Grags Campground. Slippery, but not enough snow yet to get stuck in the pull-offs. Be cautious - watch out for those who are less experienced at driving up & down a one lane winter road!
11/28/2010 Posted On: 11/29/2010 By: d_baker Info: Still able to drive to TH, barely any snow, so snowshoes can be left behind. Brought micro-spikes for the hike up to the summit of Pikes, but did not need them either.
6/19/2010 Posted On: 6/19/2010 By: ricoch3t Info: The trail is dry (no snow or mud) all the way to the top. Concur that passenger cars can easily make it to the trailhead. Happy climbing. P.S. The bathrooms now have toilet paper.
5/23/2010 Posted On: 5/24/2010 By: IHikeLikeAGirl Info: Ditto on previous post. Dry and clear all the way to the TH parking lot. A few areas of pot holes, but a passenger car could easily make it. Bathrooms are open and clean, but no toilet paper yet. Still a post holing haven (knee to hip deep) to 11K. Snowshoes helped some, but was still pretty miserable in the afternoon.
5/20/2010 Posted On: 5/20/2010 By: Vangrove Info: Road is clear all the way to upper trailhead parking lot. Trail is post hole action as low as 11K‘, recommend snow shoes.
5/8/2010 Posted On: 5/10/2010 By: 54summits Info: Went up Saturday, May 8th. The road is a breeze - no problems of any kind - all the way to Mennonite Camp. Beyond that, however, there was snow on the ground almost the whole way, and the tire tracks in some areas looked to be about 6"+ or deeper. A 4WD with high clearance will handle the road all the way to the parking lot without any problems. A 2WD with low clearance might get stuck or slip. I wouldn‘t recommend beyond Mennonite to anyone with these kinds of vehicles. The weather has been relatively warm in the Divide area the past few days, though, and looks to continue the same through the rest of this week. Maybe some of that snow will melt away by the coming weekend. -54s
4/12/2010 Posted On: 4/12/2010 By: CO Native Info: Plowed to the winter parking lot, snow covered after that with lots of evidence of people getting stuck and digging out.
4/5/2010 Posted On: 4/5/2010 By: IHikeLikeAGirl Info: Went up Sunday (4/4) in a Jeep Liberty Sport. The road to the Rocky Mountain Camp is snow free and mostly dry, with many potholes. The next 0.5 mi is snow packed with some deep tire ruts and little option to avoid them. We parked ~1 mi shy of the Crags Campground entrance (in March I drove all the way to the CG). We attempted to go further, but had to back down as the risk of getting stuck was too great. Only one other truck went ~.25 mi further before parking. No other vehicles had driven the road beyond that since the last snowstorm. Snow depths on the side of the road were at 2‘. The road to the TH has a packed down path from back country enthusiasts. Snowshoes were not needed to hike the road.
1/2/2010 Posted On: 1/3/2010 By: comin2getcha Info: The road is snow-packed but easily negotiated all the way to the campground. We were able to park just past the entrance to the campground.
12/12/2009 Posted On: 12/12/2009 By: Vangrove Info: Road is snow-packed, icy. Passable with all vehicles up to the new parking area before the campground. Always a problem with this one lane path getting around uncoming vehicles, so may be faster & easier parking just past Menonite Camp and hoofing the 20 minutes up. Feel free to email me any day for current condition updates.
11/6/2009 Posted On: 11/6/2009 By: abell_m09 Info: Road is passable all the way to the large parking area just north of campground entrance. Many people have made it but there is also a lot of evidence of people getting stuck(big ruts/holes in the snow). Ford Mustang was blocking my path after getting stuck early in the morning but met someone in a Toyota Tundra who made it after the Mustang was moved. Road is hairy in spots and chains wouldn‘t hurt! One more good snow should close this road past the Mennonite camp.
10/31/2009 Posted On: 10/31/2009 By: Vangrove Info: The road is unplowed and impassable beyond the Menonite Camp. Park at the pull-off just where the plowing stops. If you think you won‘t get good-and-stuck beyond, you will. Doesn‘t matter if there are vehicle tracks or not. Don‘t risk spending your time trying to get unstuck, or helping others do same. Enjoy your day and add the extra 20 minute hike up to the trailhead. |
