4/1/2014 Posted On: 4/1/2014 By: jeffth5 Info: USFS 252 is blocked about 1/2 - 3/4 mile beyond the 250/252 junction by a deep snow drift on the side of a ravine (the usual spot - see 3rd picture below). After that, the road is dry for about a mile before becoming snow covered above ~9,500ft. Parking lot is covered in deep snow (see below). Snow shoes or skis very helpful above 9,500ft. Recommend parking at the 250/252 junction - it is a 3.25 mile hike from that point to the TH. | 3 |

1/24/2014 Posted On: 1/26/2014 By: seano732 Info: CO 252 is blocked by a huge snow drift about 2.5 miles from the TH. We attempted the alternate route via 250, and promptly got stuck and spent an hour and a half digging ourselves out. Good times. Save yourself the aggravation, and park just past the 252/250 junction. Peace! | 2 |

11/20/2013 Posted On: 11/20/2013 By: KSU Wildcat Info: Road to TH is mostly dry. Some spots with snow-pack. Had no difficulty going up in my 2WD (FWD) Honda Civic, until the last 50 yards - and that is mostly due to less-than-great tread on my tires.
11/9/2013 Posted On: 11/10/2013 By: bunny256 Info: Road is in good shape and completely clear of snow. I made it all the way in a Mitsubishi Eclipse
11/9/2013 Posted On: 11/10/2013 By: BrentRichter Info: Was surprised after recent snows (in other mountain ranges) to find the road completely dry.
9/14/2013 Posted On: 9/14/2013 By: LasagnaRN Info: The road up to Shav/Tab is clear despite recent rains. No problem for my forester ... Happy trails!
5/13/2013 Posted On: 5/15/2013 By: esagas Info: I drove to the TH on a VW Jetta with no problems whatsoever. The dirt road is in very good shape. Just slow down on a couple of spots and you should be fine. Also, there was no snow, mud or potholes.
4/28/2013 Posted On: 4/28/2013 By: gregpeak Info: The normal route to the trailhead is clear of snow. There is a little mud but any vehicle can make it to the trailhead.
4/14/2013 Posted On: 4/14/2013 By: jaquetcj Info: skied the angel on 4.13.13. Got a bit of wind burn in the process (holy huge wind!) Anyway, trailhead status would be accessible with a 4wd vehicle. The beta in an earlier post was correct, at the sign for FR252 where youare directed to go left for the trailhead, stay right on a different road, it takes you to an intersection with FR252 just before the trailhead. It was muddy and snowy when we were there on Saturday and they got several inches of heavy, wet snow last night so the road probably hasn‘t gotten any better since we were there. You can take the normal route on FR252 but it involves sneaking around a large snow drift, you can do it but we chose not to. There was lots of snow still so bring snowshoes if you plan on gaining elevation from the TH. Have a good trip! | 1 |

3/31/2013 Posted On: 3/31/2013 By: gregpeak Info: The normal route to the trailhead is blocked by the big drift that is normally there this time of year about 3 miles before the trailhead. However, we made it to the trailhead taking the alternate route (stay right at the FR 252 left turn). The road was muddy and snowy but passable to the trailhead in a 4wd vehicle. We made it with no problem in a Ford explorer. | 2 |

2/21/2013 Posted On: 2/23/2013 By: seano732 Info: We made it 6.6 miles in from US 285 in my buddy‘s 4X4 Ford Explorer. The notorious drift is in full effect and blocking any further access. It‘s approximately 2.2 miles on the road to the official TH, and we snowshoed the whole way. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions. Peace!
1/6/2013 Posted On: 1/7/2013 By: bighornmonkey Info: Made it to within 3 miles from the Shavano/Tabeguache trailhead with a Toyota Camry (2WD sedan). Fresh tracks from 4WD vehicles with high clearance made it all the way to the official TH.
12/18/2012 Posted On: 12/18/2012 By: TilleyDOES Info: The road became impassable at the junction of CR250 and CR252, 3.2 miles from the TH. Road is completely covered, 2+ ft drifts in upper areas.
12/13/2012 Posted On: 12/13/2012 By: Furthermore Info: I was unable to drive to the trailhead due to someone being parked in the middle of the road, ~2-2.5 miles below the TH. I was unable to pass them. With competent driving and 4WD, one should make it the trailhead without any trouble. The road is snow covered and there are few drifts up to 6 inches deep. Why they parked in middle of the road, not allowing anyone to pass, still leaves me scratchin‘. Unable to summit my 13er due to the extra delay. | 2 |
