3/24/2018 Posted On: 3/26/2018 By: HikerBox Info: Road is getting muddy and some holes and ruts are growing - my snow tired civic made it just fine but with a lot of maneuvering. Most of the ice is gone, just a few spots and nowhere steep. I would expect the ruts to grow as things continue to melt.
3/17/2018 Posted On: 3/18/2018 By: sdicenso Info: I parked at the lower lot and walked up the road to the Crags Campground. The gate is open, so you can park in there. I don't know what the fee is though or if they are even collecting it this time of year. The road is in good shape, just one slick spot where I was fish tailing, so put it in 4WD, but probably doable without.
3/11/2018 Posted On: 3/11/2018 By: mikemalick Info: Any vehicle can make it there. Road does get a little sloppy. Some parts are completely bare. Never left 2wd.
1/28/2018 Posted On: 1/29/2018 By: Giant hills Info: Snow for last mile or two. Never put my tacoma in 4 so 2wd with good tires should be fine, but after another storm or 2 thatll probably be a negative ghost rider.
1/18/2018 Posted On: 1/18/2018 By: tomcat32 Info: Still open to the trailhead. An inch or two of snow packed to the dirt. I think a low clearance Front wheel drive would be fine as of today.
12/30/2017 Posted On: 12/30/2017 By: colorado yooper Info: Road is fine to main trailhead. Campground is closed. Forrest Service will close when conditions dictate.
12/1/2017 Posted On: 12/1/2017 By: Jim Davies Info: The road is now closed to motor vehicles just past the Mennonite camp. Foot access is still allowed. https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/psicc/alerts-notices | 2 |

11/29/2017 Posted On: 11/29/2017 By: markf Info: A few snow patches, but no real issues. The road is fine for 2WD and summer/4-season tires.
11/10/2017 Posted On: 11/10/2017 By: JQDivide Info: No issues with snow. A few spots of thin packed snow.
8/19/2017 Posted On: 8/21/2017 By: kayleenann8 Info: Open and good to go. The lot was pretty full at 6 a.m. on Saturday so arrive early for a spot.
6/18/2017 Posted On: 6/20/2017 By: chicagostylehotdog Info: Open and good to go. See the attached picture for the closure notice for June 25th. We were one of three cars Sunday at 4am. People were utilizing the overflow parking by the time we got down at 11:15am.
6/11/2017 Posted On: 6/12/2017 By: Jim Davies Info: The road is now open, but the campground is closed, and dispersed camping is still banned. Forest Service post on 6/10: "The Crags area is now open with some limitations. Please read entire post for all of the details! The Crags area on the Pikes Peak Ranger District has re-opened following hazard tree removal. The Crags Campground has not yet opened for the summer, but is expected to open in the next few weeks. No camping or campfires are allowed on either side of Forest Road 383, and parking is allowed at designated trailheads only. Hazard trees still exist in the area from the spruce bark beetle infestation, so visitors should be aware of dead trees and the potential for falling trees, especially in high winds." Drove my Corolla up the road Monday without problems, although the surface is a little soft and there are a lot of loose rocks.
6/7/2017 Posted On: 6/7/2017 By: katehikerun Info: Called the ranger a few weeks ago, he said the campground would be open mid June. We drove by it today and it's still closed. You can't even get to Mennonite Camp.
6/6/2017 Posted On: 6/6/2017 By: Dan_Suitor Info: According to the Pikes Peak Ranger District, it is still closed and not expected to open until later in June, but you might want to call them in case it opens earlier.
