6/1/2025 Route: Green Timber Gulch TH Posted On: 6/2/2025, By: rleclair Info: Dry to wet conditions on the trail from the TH to about 10,800'. Deep snow conditions starting at 10,800 navigating through treed area of the route. Snow easily collapses with each foot step. Maybe snowshoes would help here to tree line but I imagine the snow would still collapse frequently making it a sufferfest. Got to about 11,300' and 1.5 miles in (without snowshoes) before turning around. Conditions will improve through June. Beautiful area though and will return! |

3/19/2025 Route: Poplar Gulch Posted On: 3/19/2025, By: bigfoot1 Info: Attempt, got a late start. There's an old trench with about 1" of fluff at the bottom. I put snowshoes on around 10.8k ft, and fluff probably got 6" deep max over the crust. Trench went away at the stream crossing, which has a solid snow bridge. Broke trail from there to 11.4k ft, only breaking through to mid thigh depth about 30% of the time, so pretty easy all things considered. Turned around due to impending snow storm. Made it back to the car right after flurries started. |

11/8/2022 Route: Poplar Gulch from St. Elmo Posted On: 11/8/2022, By: ScottLovesRMNP Info: All but the first 10% of the route is entirely snow-covered, and snow is deep enough that we preferred using snowshoes beyond the first mile or two all the way to treeline. Trail is discernable beneath the snow for now, but it's piled up pretty good at this point and will be hard to follow soon. Once on the ridge crest, unavoidable snow continues all the way to the summit. Winds were extremely strong today, consistently 25mph above treeline, with gusts that may have approached 50 mph. We both had difficulty maintaining our balance and staying upright during frequent sudden gusts for the top 300 feet or so of the climb. If properly prepared for the wind and cold, this low 13er felt safe due to low-angled slopes, but it was very winter-like above treeline all day. |

5/8/2022 Route: Coal Camp Canyon Posted On: 5/8/2022, By: d_baker Info: Southern aspects on the peaks to W of Princeton very dry. We didn't carry snowshoes and didn't step on snow until treeline and that wasn't even necessary. Stupid approach up steep treed slopes. 2nd time I've used this approach for same peak. I'm not very smart, or I am forgetful. I hope not to use this approach again, lol. |

5/23/2020 Route: From Point 13,317 Posted On: 5/24/2020, By: supranihilest Info: Completely dry. If ascending Point 12,837 like we did there's one short snow crossing but the remaining ascent is dry. We attempted to go down Green Timber Gulch and turned around. There was still HUGE amounts of snow. DO NOT go down Green Timber Gulch without boots, insulation, waterproof gear, etc., and perhaps most importantly, ample time, for at least another couple of weeks. The snow there was waist deep, completely unsupportive, soaking wet, and extended far below treeline. Instead we went down Poplar Gulch, which was 99% dry, and hitched a ride back to Cottonwood Lake. |

1/14/2017 Route: Poplar Gulch Posted On: 1/15/2017, By: youngk2844 Info: The road St. Elmo is plowed. There's parking just east of St. Elmo. Arrive early if you want a place to park. Otherwise, you'll be parking further back on the road. On the way to St. Elmo, we passed the trailhead for Antero and did not see any trench or ski tracks. Our group of four broke trail (on snowshoes) up Poplar Gulch about 2.5 miles before we turned around. The snow was about knee deep, definitely a good workout. Even if we had the energy to reach the ridge, it looked loaded. This is a great snowshoe trail with moderate elevation gain. |
