10/25/2024 Route: From saddle Chalk Rock Posted On: 10/25/2024, By: rachel Info: I started from the end of 4WD forest road 344.G making a loop of Kreutzer, Chalk Rock and Jones. Snow amounts varied from dry to calf deep in the drifts. Carried Microspikes but did not wear. Windy and cold, but sunny. |

6/11/2023 Route: North Ridge Posted On: 6/16/2023, By: sdkeil Info: We traversed to Mt. Kreutzer from Emma Burr on the mostly snow free south ridge of Mt. Kreutzer. If summiting Mt. Kreutzer via the North ridge you will be parking near 11,200 to start. The snow was solid enough to walk on in the morning; however, it became punchy when we descended the saddle between Kreutzer and Chalk Rock Mountain. With careful route finding snowshoes could be left at that car, but to completely avoid punching through snowshoes might be useful. There is a solid snow slope heading up to the saddle between Mt. Kreutzer and Chalk Rock Mountain. It is low enough angle that it can be done in just boots, but it might be useful to bring microspikes if the snow is still hard in the early morning. |

8/6/2022 Route: from Chalk Rock Mtn Posted On: 8/6/2022, By: ScottLovesRMNP Info: Although it's about 1.5 miles south of "Chalk Rock Mtn", you can make fast time on this up-and-down gentle ridgeline, covered mostly in grass. My problems began after reaching Mt. Kreutzer's summit and needing to return to the Ptarmigan Lake trailhead. I decided I didn't want to retrace my route over "Chalk Rock Mtn" and Jones B, although in retrospect, that would've been better. Instead, I spotted both a trail and a fire road in the valley south of Jones. My map showed that the fire road would eventually wrap back around to Jones' east side where I had begun ascending it. However, once you drop below treeline off Mt. Kreutzer and find the trail, be aware the trail doesn't intersect the fire road! That required a rugged, steep bushwhacking with lots of elevation lost. Regaining the elevation once the fire road is found is substantial and probably no better than just going back along the ridges above treeline instead, which is what I wished I would've done. Eventually, you can get back to the Gladstone-Jones saddle, but it wasn't fun after a lot of bushwhacking and a lot of sun on a hot day. It made for a good loop, but just be aware the whole thing is harder than it looks on paper. The terrain on the south side of Jones Mountain B is quite wild and the mountain is enormous so it takes a while to circumnavigate its base, even after you find a trail or a road to follow! Probably much more sensible as a point-to-point hike. |

6/3/2022 Route: West Ridge Posted On: 6/3/2022, By: malogos Info: Parked at Garden Basin trailhead. Snow is completely avoidable, so the route is effectively dry. Gaining the ridge is a major pain, though. |

8/24/2020 Route: South Ridge Posted On: 8/25/2020, By: Flyingfish Info: Ridge is straightforward class 2 and a pretty big test on your talus ability. Pass and its lots of fun and quick, fail and it is super tedious. |
