10/17/2021 Route: Cottonwood Pass Posted On: 10/18/2021, By: IHikeLikeAGirl Info: GORGEOUS DAY! Started 10:15a, stayed on the ridge, after leaving the CDT/CT at the 1st saddle. 1-8" of soft snow between first bump to the 2nd saddle (pic #1). Then skirted the next bump on dry tundra. Reversed track, in lieu of dropping to the valley. Southern aspects are ~99.911% snow free. Windblown ridges with a little snow. Just enough snow on/between the talus (at the final pitch to the summit) to be quite annoying (pic #2, more snow than pic shows). Wet, snowy, boots slipped on top of the rocks and snow hid obstacles/gaps between the rocks. Didn't seem worth putting on micro spikes, but may have helped. Brought, but didn't use: snowshoes, micros, gaiters, ice axe, and extra socks. Sunk in to mid shin at times, but feet stayed dry...ish.... Bluebird day and temps warmed to the 40s at 13k, was in 2 long sleeved shirts, no gloves, and hot. Snow softened on the return. With the current forecast, this area could have another beautiful weekend, with little snow to contend with. |

10/5/2021 Route: From Cottonwood Pass Posted On: 10/5/2021, By: Jan van Tilburg Info: Still summer conditions. On north side spots of snow. All the mnts to the south had snow on them. Found the register with a pencil. Found another one on the ground at the summit. So now there are two pencils. On the way to Turner I went over the mountain in between (PT 12,681). On the way back I skirted that mountain and I regretted it. A slog talus fest. Next time (?) I'll go through the valley (South Texas creek, north of PT12,681) then to the saddle. |

After the rain, hail, and wind stopped I went back for another beating, this time starting from a large pulloff on the southern side of the road. The route ascends steeply through the forest towards the 12,581/Turner saddle, essentially. The route naturally funnels that way. Contour under 12,581 and Turner becomes obvious above treeline. Cross some marshy flats then ascend steeply towards the ridge crest. There's some loose stuff but not bad. The final summit block is rocky Class 2/Class 2+, mostly stable. |

There are two or three small snow patches leading up to treeline which have wet but supportive snow. There's one large snow patch prior to the summit of Point 12,581 that's avoidable. From there the snow down to the saddle can be avoided and the ascent up Turner is dry. The saddle between 12,581 and Turner is rather deep, just an FYI. |

6/17/2017 Route: Denny Creek Trailhead Posted On: 6/18/2017, By: JasonKline Info: Route from Denny Creek trailhead to Harenstein Lake was free of snow. The creeks were running high, so one or two crossings were wet. After Harenstein Lake, the westward bushwhack to the north slope of Turner was still snow-covered and wet with lots of drainage below the snow and some post-holing. The bushwhack wasn't so fun on the way up, when I went too far south; it was a lot easier on the way back when I followed a sparse path that ended up near the northern part of the lake. There's still a decent amount of snow on the north side of Turner, but it is possible to find a route the entire way up that avoids snow and isn't steep if you don't mind going a little out of the way. |
