Peak Condition Updates

Route: from Pieplant Mill

Info: This area has by far the most open and easy forest I have encountered, no underbrush at all. Heading up Jenkins' South Ridge was a breeze until you get to treeline, where it starts to feel like a drag. Minor snow once on the summit ridge. The ridge to UN 13,145 (which we nicknamed "Eggplant Benchmark", for obvious reasons) was the crux of the day. Some Class 3- scrambling and some snow walking and some skirting or climbing gendarmes, but nothing crazy. If you're climbing low peaks like these, you'll know what to do. There's a cornice on this ridge that is amazingly large, keep your distance. The ridge from "Eggplant" to Grizzly Peak E is probably doable, but looks tedious and has a very low saddle, so we followed previous beta and dropped an obvious dirt/talus gully to the basin and went up broad slope to its summit ridge. The gully was snow free and had some dirt skiing, but also a lot of unstable talus, so be careful if climbing with partners. The route up Grizzly from there had snow if you want it and talus if you don't. Descending Grizzly, we opted for its snow-filled South gully that is prominently visible from Taylor Park at the moment. Some of it was glissade-able, but a lot of rocks are sticking up so a glissade won't be doable for long. Half our group opted for plunge-stepping which worked well too. More delightfully spacious forest led us to the Timberline trail which took us back to the Pieplant (Eggplant) Mill.

Info: This is more of a mosquito condition report. I had a steady swarm of mosquitoes accompany me all the way up to 13,200', making any stops very unpleasant for almost the entire ascent. Ridge traverse over to Grizzly was clear of mosquitoes and snow.

Info: Summer condition. Mining road to 11,000 and then nice gully to gain southeast ridge at treeline. Nice summit. Many mosquitos below treeline.

Route: Southeast Ridge from Pieplant

Info: Jenkins is a nice, easy, quick hike from Pieplant. Take the Timberline Trail a short distance and then just hike straight up the southeast ridge. A map or GPX might be helpful to know where to leave the trail, but then route finding is obvious: go up! The forest is easy and open, the ridge is never too steep, and the only boulders and talus on the route are on the upper part of the ridge and near the summit. I attempted to add 13,140 B and Grizzly E as well but my route finding skills were garbage today, so my bail route took me down from the saddle between the two peaks and into the basin, where I hiked down to rejoin my ascent route. If Jenkins is your only peak for the day then just go back down the ridge.
