5/25/2025 Route: Dreadful Hue Couloir Posted On: 5/25/2025, By: Geckser Info: Arthurspiderman and I skied Red and Middle Mountain today. Two surprisingly fun and engaging lines! The initial plan was to just hit Middle, but we drove quite a ways up Peekaboo gulch and we were feeling strong so we tacked Red on. Road was in passing shape and we made it to 11,100 with relative ease. From there we followed the road to a fully dry rib on Red. Extremely cruiser. We had never seen this line before and were going off Caltopo but it turned out to be an awesome, moderate, inset couloir. We hit corn at 9:30, this line is very east facing. From there we traversed towards Middle, only dropping to 11,700. We booted up to the saddle and walked up the remarkably dry ridge on Middle. No lines from the summit left but we downclimbed 80 feet through the major North gash. Snow has been melting quickly and there were three rocky chokes to navigate. Good snow conditions, so we skied from the bottom of the gash to 11,300 where we took off our skis and crossed the stream. Red Mountain’s couloir was exceptional, and I would recommend it to any Sawatch Ski Appreciators. The line on Middle would be better if you could ski from the summit but that time has passed. Snows going quick now!! |

9/11/2021 Route: McNasser-Grizz-Gar-Red-Peekaboo Posted On: 9/11/2021, By: daway8 Info: Seems this peak has never had a conditions update - for easy reference I'll mention here this peak would be MUCH easier to do from Peakaboo Gulch and hiking the old mining road till the slopes below it. Instead I made a loop that descended that way, starting from McNasser Gulch then up Grizzly, Garfield and traversing to Red Mtn B. As the sparse trip reports suggest, that traverse is VERY loose and sketchy. There was a hint of a trail at the start of the traverse and a clear trail going partway over from Red towards Garfield that I was relieved to join up with after floundering around through lots of sketch. Going down towards Peekaboo was pretty trivial. Will add a TR later with photos, tracks and more detail. |
